Dissatisfied with the decision made by the Ministry of Transport and Public Works (MTOP) to close the Cuenca-Molleturo highway for 40 days, after the carnival holiday, the residents of this rural parish came to the center of the Azuaya capital to show their disagreement .
They rejected the proposal for an alternative route that for them does not present guarantees and the accusations that behind their position there would be political interests.
Around 200 citizens who live and work in the 200 communities of Molleturo arrived at the ground floor of the Government of Azuay to demand an immediate solution to the road situation from the MTOP authorities.
After two months the Cuenca-Molleturo road is reopened
During the last three months of 2021, there were landslides and rocks on this highway, especially at km 49. Therefore, at the time, the MTOP ordered the closure due to the risk that these events implied.
Now, within 40 days, the ministry plans to carry out cleaning, stabilization and expansion work so that traffic flows at 100%.
Javier Feijó, president of Esteropiedras, said that this sit-in responds to their rejection of the temporary closure of kilometer 49, where traffic accidents have occurred in recent months that have caused material damage, injuries and even one death.
In his opinion, the decision of the Public Works portfolio does not consider that the enterprises and businesses that are located on this highway and their daily sales depend entirely on travelers.
“Many have loans in banks, so imagine how they can respond to the banks,” said the leader.
While the stabilization work continues from the MTOP, two road proposals are proposed: for the residents, the Migüir-San Pedro de Yumate route and for interprovincial transport that links Azuay and Guayas la Cuenca-Zhud-Cochancay.
Regarding the first alternative, the leader affirmed that it does not present the necessary guarantees.
Given this, Luis Mario Barsallo, zonal undersecretary 6 of the MTOP, said in a press conference offered last Tuesday that after a meeting with the inhabitants of Molleturo, where according to him it was agreed to open the alternate route through Migüir, “they stop the work ” and in a second meeting “they begin to ask for additional things (…) but the last one already talks about more complex issues such as the provision of new road equipment”.
The Cuenca-Molleturo road is closed indefinitely after another mishap at Km 49
Due to this background, last Wednesday Minister Marcelo Cabrera confirmed that after carnival (February 26 to March 1) they will dedicate themselves to work closing the road.
Who was also upset was the president of the parish government of Molleturo. He argued that the undersecretary of the MTOP was untrue by not complying with compensation such as “fixing the entire road, recognizing the victims of the accidents, supporting the agricultural sectors by managing the renegotiation of credits and giving them scrap metal instead of useful machinery.” .
The inhabitants of Molleturo will not allow the closure of the road announced by the MTOP, they stressed. (I)
