In 20% of pregnant women who have had coronavirus, children lag behind in development. This, according to TASS, was stated by Deputy Director for Research of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Gorelov.

“The slowdown in the pace of development – both mental and physical – in such children is absolutely clearly visible in 20% of cases,” he said.

Gorelov explained that “coronavirus causes a change in the placenta.” According to him, when a pregnant woman becomes ill with a coronavirus, the placental circulation is disturbed. As a result, less oxygen is supplied and development may be retarded.

He also added that in young children who have recovered from coronavirus, the most common complication is Kawasaki syndrome.

Earlier, the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation allowed pregnant women to be vaccinated with the Sputnik V vaccine.

According to the latest data, the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Russia increased by 197,076 per day (against 183,103 a day earlier). The total number of cases reached 13 million 527 thousand 845.

Over the past day, 701 people have become victims of coronavirus (669 a day earlier), and 338,091 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The number of cases of recovery per day was 106,092 (the day before 97,163), since the onset of coronavirus – 10 million 909 thousand 397.
