The International Olympic Committee (IOC) intends to complete the case related to the doping test of 15-year-old Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva. IOC Communications Director Mark Adams told reporters today.
He acknowledged that such “situations do not make it easier for the (Olympic) Games to take place.” “All the athletes who are here are committed to clean sports, but we cannot simply dismiss such cases, we need to bring it to the end, otherwise we will be less trusted,” Adams is quoted by TASS.
According to him, the IOC expects that “an additional clarification will be issued, although the main statement is already there”
As an official of the organization pointed out, there are “many legal subtleties” in this case, but the problem “is not that she (Valiyeva – ed.) is a minor, or we (in the IOC – ed.) are protecting her.” “We hear various rumors, there is noise,” Adams lamented, adding that the International Olympic Committee is “100% against doping.”
At the same time, he stressed that Russian athletes should continue to participate in the Olympic Games in Beijing, despite the situation with the figure skater.
Recall, today it became known that Valieva’s doping test, taken on December 25, 2021 (before the start of the Beijing Olympics) at the Russian Championship, which was held in St. Petersburg, gave a positive result for the banned cardio drug trimetazidine.
“The result was reported by the WADA-accredited anti-doping laboratory in Stockholm on February 8th. After that, the athlete was conditionally suspended by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA),” the International Testing Agency (ITA) said in a statement. However, Valieva protested the suspension, and on February 9, RUSADA decided to lift it.
Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee has filed an appeal against the ruling with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). “A decision on the result of the Russian skaters in the team tournament can only be made after a final decision on the merits of the case has been made,” the ITA said in a statement.
Earlier at the Olympics, the awards ceremony for Russian figure skaters was postponed. The fact that a cardiac drug was found in Valieva’s sample was reported by the media, citing sources. Read more about the situation with the figure skater here.
