The Prosecutor General’s Office demanded that 22 real estate objects and 6 cars that belong to the family of the ex-head of the traffic police of Stavropol Alexei Safonov, who was detained in a corruption case, be turned into state revenue.
As Znak.com was told in the Industrial District Court of Stavropol, the total amount of the penalty is 83 million rubles.
The prosecutor’s office believes that Safonov could not buy so much property with his official salary. Earlier, the court seized cars, foreign cars, apartments and mansions, including a luxurious palace, which attracted public attention with a throne and a golden toilet bowl.
The defense side insists that real estate, including land and cars, belong to the family of Safonov’s common-law wife, who is engaged in business. Moreover, they were allegedly bought with a mortgage and loans.
In December, Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Igor Krasnov stated that numerous real estate objects and cars were issued to Alexei Safonov himself and his relatives. He also said that a number of subordinates of the traffic police officer who are involved in his case had assets worth hundreds of millions of rubles, “they also cannot boast of an ascetic lifestyle.”
Aleksey Safonov was arrested in July of this year in connection with a group of persons taking a bribe on an especially large scale. During a search conducted in Safonov’s house, it turned out that it was decorated with gold from the inside, the rooms were furnished with inlaid furniture, and a gilded sink and toilet were installed in the bathroom. Safonov himself announced that the “palace” with the “golden toilet bowl” does not belong to him, but to his common-law wife, and he did not choose the design for the mansion.
Znak.com sources in the Stavropol lawyer community say that the palace in which the traffic cop lived was transferred to Safonov’s children at the end of last summer.
