In Balao, President Lasso offers to get resources ‘from where there are none’ to finance three works that mitigate the effects of winter

The President of the Republic, Guillermo Lasso, toured the sectors of the Balao canton affected by winter this Thursday morning, February 10. In this town in the province of Guayas, the river that passes through the cantonal head overflowed and that caused flooding in several places in both the urban and rural areas.

The president mentioned that it is necessary for said canton to work on definitive solutions to prevent the recurrence of floods every year in the winter season.

River overflowed again and flooded certain neighborhoods and areas of Balao

He urged the mayor of Balao, Jonnatan Molina, to assume responsibility for the project to dredge the river with the same name as the town, to build a bridge and to erect retaining walls. And he committed the support of the Government in terms of allocating economic resources for that.

With these works, the president explained, a winter as harsh as the current one could be faced in the future without affecting the lives of the inhabitants.

“I will find financial resources for emergencies where there are none, but they will have the financial resources for these three works,” said President Lasso, according to statements collected by the television station. Ecuavisa.

During the previous weekend, the Balao River rose again in level and complicated some neighborhoods and enclosures. Citizen reports realized that the river overflowed and the water entered areas of Barrio Nuevo and areas such as La Libertad and San Carlos.

Balao is declared in emergency after floods

The Municipality moved canoes to the precincts to be able to attend to families that were affected, it has also set up shelters for the victims.

The first affectation due to the rains in this town occurred between Thursday 27 and Friday 28 January. Given the magnitude of the problem, Balao was declared an emergency by the Government of Guayas.

In the last few hours, Vice President Alfredo Borrero was also in the area of ​​the El Palmar campus, in Cotopaxi, which was affected days ago by the overflow of rivers. Several houses were destroyed by the winter storm.

Accompanied by other state authorities, Borrero toured the site to assess the damage caused by the winter storm.

Various machinery and personnel from different institutions carry out actions to deal with this eventuality. Borrero spoke with the citizens to express their solidarity and support from the Government.

For her part, Vice Minister Carolina Ormaza reported that the presence of MTOP machinery and technical personnel was reinforced to enable the Latacunga – La Maná road. In addition, she reported that all the support is provided in the cleaning tasks in the sector.

On February 5, the declaration of an emergency was requested so that the distribution of resources can be given immediately. (I)
