In the caravan, Álex Quiñónez’s coffin entered Esmeraldas and upon reaching Las Guacharacas he was received with applause

A caravan of more than twenty vehicles escorted the coffin of the athlete Álex Quiñónez. The sprinter’s remains, which were transferred by a funeral company in Guayaquil, arrived in Esmeraldas, his native land, around midnight.

The funeral procession was received at the San Mateo control by Olympic medalist Jefferson Pérez; Governor Tania Obando, and Pablo Velasco, commander of the Subzone 8 National Police.

From there, two motorcycles escorted the caravan to the residence of the sprinter’s parents, on Paraiso and Esmeraldas streets in the Unión and Progreso neighborhood, in the Las Guacharacas sector.

In the neighborhood, relatives and acquaintances of the athlete gathered to receive the coffin. Loud applause was heard as the mortuary box was lowered into the home.

Police agents closed the entrances to the aforementioned streets with metal fences and security was provided in that sector.

The Ecuadorian Olympic sprinter was shot dead on the night of this Friday the 22nd. The violent act occurred in the Colinas de la Florida sector, in the northwest of Guayaquil.

According to witnesses, two subjects got out of a white car and fired at Quiñónez. Along with the athlete, Christopher Arcalla Ramírez, 23, who was a singer of urban music, was shot to death.

The family opted for a moment of privacy upon receiving the athlete’s remains. The door of the three-story house was closed to continue with the wake.

Before being transferred to Esmeraldas, Quiñónez’s body was briefly veiled in Carchi and Sedala, in Guayaquil.

The burning chapel will be at the Folke Anderson Stadium starting at 2:00 p.m. and the burial will be at the Esmeraldas Municipal Cemetery. (I)
