The carnival is a three-day celebrationfrom Sunday to Tuesday, which takes place in countries with a Christian tradition just before the start of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday.
This day may vary from one year to another, but it will always occur between the months of February and March, will depend on the liturgical calendar.
The word carnival is derived from the Italian carnivalformerly carnelevare, composed in turn by the words meat which means ‘meat’ and is worth ‘remove’. Thus it follows that the meaning results in a ‘farewell to the flesh’, since during the following 40 days, from Lent to Easter or Easter Sunday (April 17, 2022)Christians will enter a time of fasting, reflection, abstinence and will avoid eating red meat.
This carnival falls on Monday February 28 and Tuesday March 1 and will be one of the longest holidays in Ecuador, because it joins the previous weekend. This holiday is not recoverable.
After the carnival, the next holiday will be Holy Friday (April 15), which joins Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 April.
VAT reduction in tourist activities
A novelty for this upcoming Carnival holiday is the 8% discount for tourist activities, after the issuance of the executive decree of the president Guillermo Lasso in which he formalized the reduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 12% to 8% during the next Carnival holiday, counting the days February 26, 27, 28 and March 1, 2022; and for the Easter holiday, which includes Friday the 15th, Saturday the 16th and Sunday the 17th of April this year.
