For the first time in history, only five employees work at the Russian Consulate General in New York, Consul General Sergei Ovsyannikov told RIA Novosti.

The number of employees in January was more than halved due to the visa containment policy pursued by the United States. According to Ovsyannikov, five families left at the end of January.

The Consul General added that 12 diplomats had previously worked at the consulate. In particular, for the first time there is no security officer in the Consulate General. The diplomat admitted that even fewer people would work in the mission in the future.

In addition, Ovsyannikov said that for almost a year the US authorities have not issued a visa to diplomat Anatoly Kargapolov, who is to replace him as Consul General. The replacement was supposed to happen last May. The diplomat admitted that a situation could arise when there would be no Russian Consul General in the United States and his duties would be performed by the senior diplomat of the mission.

Recall that earlier the State Department told Russian diplomats that the Russian ambassador would be forced to leave the United States by April if Moscow did not fulfill a number of Washington’s conditions for issuing visas to the guards of the American ambassador in Russia.
