The US Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs is considering imposing new sanctions on Russia for Moscow’s cyberattacks against Ukraine. This, according to RBC, is stated in the publication Politico with reference to high-ranking members of the Senate.
It is noted that some senators are proposing to include sanctions for cyber attacks in a broader bill to take action against Russia in the event of an “invasion” of Ukraine. However, Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that “if sanctions were applied before the invasion, they would be associated with Russian cyber attacks inside Ukraine.”
Earlier, a group of Democrats led by the chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Robert Menendez, introduced a bill to the Senate called the “Ukraine Sovereignty Protection Act of 2022”. It involves the imposition of sanctions against the President of the Russian Federation, the Prime Minister, the heads of the Foreign and Defense Ministry, the Chief of the General Staff of the RF Armed Forces and other representatives of the military leadership. In addition, restrictive measures may affect the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. An identical bill was later also introduced to the House of Representatives of Congress.
Last month, unknown persons attacked at least 70 state-owned websites in Ukraine. Moscow denied involvement in cyberattacks. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that Russia had nothing to do with hacker attacks on Ukrainian government sites.
