Finnish MP Mika Niikko has been asked to resign after he posted a resonant tweet about French President Emmanuel Macron, Russia and Ukraine’s non-participation in NATO. It is reported by Yle.
On his Twitter account, Niikko wrote that the French president must publicly declare Ukraine’s non-participation in NATO, otherwise, in his opinion, Russia cannot consider the negotiations successful. This, we recall, is about the recent five-hour meeting between the leader of the Russian Federation and Macron at a very long table, after which the French president announced that he had agreed with Putin to prevent the escalation of the situation around Ukraine. Parliamentary colleagues criticized Niikko’s tweet, and he was forced to delete the post.
Meanwhile, the Finnish authorities claim that they have a very specific position on this issue, which is that all independent countries have the right to make their own decisions regarding their security.
Later, Niikko admitted that he simply could not articulate his idea clearly, and stressed that he supported the sovereignty of Ukraine, but he still did not really see the real membership of this country in NATO.
Earlier, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said that Russia’s demands cannot be compromised. In turn, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen noted that Finland can count on solidarity from the EU. According to her, the challenge posed by Russia to European security concerns all EU countries.
