Can I be fined for driving a car with a motorcycle license?

In Ecuador there are different types of licenses that citizens can access after the corresponding process.

There are non-professional licenses, of which the majority of citizens are beneficiaries for private purposes, which are divided into:

  • Type A License: Allows you to drive mopeds, motorcycles, tricars, quads.
  • Type B License: Allows you to drive cars and trucks with trailers up to 1.75 tons of payload.
  • Type F License: Allows you to drive special vehicles adapted for people with some type of disability.

The type B driver’s license, formerly known as sportsmanis granted to users who require the license for the first time, details the National Transit Agency (ANT).

How long can you drive with expired licenses?

This type of license enables its holder to drive cars and trucks with trailers of up to 1.75 tons of payload or mobile homes, as determined by law.

On the other hand, type A licenseis exclusively allowed to drive Motor vehicles such as: mopeds, motorcycles, tricar, quads. Thus, it is not permitted drive cars or vans coupled to the corresponding measures with this type of license.

The Traffic Contraventions of Ecuador, according to the Comprehensive Penal Code (COIP), indicate that this action is registered as aa Traffic Violation -first class- and is fined.

A fine of 2 SBU (Unified Basic Salary) is established, a reduction of 10 points in the license and retention of the vehicle for 7 days in the following cases:

The ANT has already begun the 50% reduction in the value of the license for drivers who have not lost their 30 points

  • Carry out passenger transport without a qualifying title.
  • Driving a vehicle with a license of a lower category than the required one.
