The American private aerospace company SpaceX, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, lost about 40 of the 49 Starlink Internet satellites out of 49 launched into orbit on February 3 this year as a result of a geomagnetic storm, Interfax reports.

As indicated by the company, due to the storm, air resistance has become 50% stronger than during previous launches. The specialists decided to put the mini-satellites into safe mode, in which they moved sideways in orbit, in order to reduce resistance, but these measures did not help.

At the same time, SpaceX assured that “the risk of collision with other satellites is zero.” The design of Starlink provides for complete destruction upon entry into the Earth’s atmosphere, the fall of debris on the planet or (in a different outcome of events) the formation of space debris is excluded, RBC notes.

SpaceX has launched more than 2,000 satellites in total, but not all are operational or in the required orbit.

We also recall that earlier in February, the National Reconnaissance Agency’s NROL-87 spy satellite was launched into orbit. With this mission, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was poisoned into space.
