Patients who have undergone coronavirus may subsequently lose limbs due to thrombosis and a critical deterioration in blood supply, said MD, surgeon Andrey Chupin.

According to the doctor, due to the fact that the coronavirus gives serious complications to the cardiovascular system, primarily to the blood coagulation system, thrombosis occurs “very often” in those who have had this disease. Chupin stressed that the arteries of the limbs are mainly affected. Against the background of thrombosis, severe ischemia can develop – a critical deterioration in blood supply, and it can reach the amputation of a limb, RIA Novosti reports.

“During the pandemic, there were many such cases,” the surgeon noted. At the same time, according to him, there is no clear pattern in the matter of time during which thrombosis can develop after an illness. Complications can occur both at the peak of the disease, and after a few months. The risk persists for a long time, the doctor emphasized. At the same time, the more severely a person was ill, the longer the risks of thrombotic complications will remain, the doctor specified.

In addition, the risk group includes patients suffering from atherosclerosis, especially if they have already undergone vascular surgery.

Chupin added that those patients who do not suffer from atherosclerosis and had covid on an outpatient basis, in a milder form, without severe lung damage, usually do not belong to the risk group, but they also need to control the situation. According to the doctor, those who easily endured the disease, but subsequently did not undergo anticoagulant therapy, may also experience thrombosis.
