The head of the department of the mobile operator Life (Belarus) was detained on charges of leaking personal data of Belarusian security officials. This was reported by the Telegram channel of the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (GUBOP MVD) of Belarus.

According to the GUBOP, during the August 2020 protests, the suspect “methodically browsed” Telegram channels recognized as extremist in Belarus, which post personal data of law enforcement officers and civil servants. Noticing that there were gaps in many publications, he decided that they needed to be filled. In the event that a published citizen or his family used the services of the mobile operator Life, the available information was transferred to the channel administrators and made publicly available. This exposed the security forces to the danger of round-the-clock bullying or the risk of becoming victims of “lone psychos”.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs published a video with the repentance of the detainee.

The mass protests of 2020 began in Belarus shortly after the presidential election, which was won by Alexander Lukashenko. The protesters accused the authorities of falsifying the election results. As a result, some of the protest leaders were arrested, others fled abroad, and Belarus was subjected to yet another US and EU economic sanctions.
