An online petition for the resignation of the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, posted on the Change.org website on the morning of February 7 by Russian opposition politician Ilya Yashin, has gained over 100,000 signatures.

The author of the petition emphasizes that Ramzan Kadyrov created a typical “state within a state” in Chechnya, which has its own laws, and not the legislation of the Russian Federation. The creator of the petition also recalls the threats against journalists, human rights activists and members of their families, which are allowed by both Ramzan Kadyrov himself and his immediate entourage; about the statement of the head of Chechnya about the need for federal subsidies, without which the republic “will not last even three months”; and about “Kadyrov’s army”, which is loyal to him personally.

The petition for the resignation of Kadyrov was commented by the press secretary of Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Peskov, who believes that thanks to the anonymized voting mechanism, votes on the Change.org platform can be inflated.

The topic of Ramzan Kadyrov’s statements and behavior has become especially relevant in connection with the fate of Zarema Musaeva, the wife of former judge Sandi Yangulbaev, who was kidnapped in Nizhny Novgorod and taken to Chechnya. A woman accused of using violence against a representative of the authorities – a policeman – is in a pre-trial detention center, her husband and children have left Russia. The sons of the Yangulbaevs are being sought out in Chechnya on charges of “assisting terrorism.”
