North Korea, under severe international sanctions, is paying for its missile and nuclear programs with cryptocurrencies stolen from successful cyberattacks. It is reported by the BBC with reference to a UN report available to the publication.
Hackers hacked at least three cryptocurrency exchanges in North America, Europe and Asia. The sum stolen by them only for the past year is equivalent to $400 million.
The results of the investigation have been submitted to the UN commission dealing with sanctions against the DPRK.
Although Pyongyang is banned from conducting nuclear tests and launching ballistic missiles, it continues to develop its military nuclear program. North Korea manages to circumvent sanctions and conduct joint scientific research that gives access to the necessary technologies. A week ago, North Korea successfully tested an intermediate-range ballistic missile and a month ago launched its third hypersonic missile in its history.
