In Russia, due to the suspension of medical examinations and oncoscreening, the number of oncological diseases detected at an advanced stage may increase. Andrei Karpin, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, chief freelance oncologist of the Russian Ministry of Health, warned about this in an interview with RBC.

According to him, since 2017 there has been an expansion of screening programs and medical examinations, and the proportion of detected cases of malignant tumors has also increased.

However, Karpin pointed out, the coronavirus pandemic and the associated suspension of screening had a negative impact on early detection.

“In 2021, this indicator began to grow towards pre-Covid values, but it is obvious that we are in for a situation of increasing neglect and mortality rates due to cases not diagnosed during 2020,” the oncologist complains.

We also add that earlier the deputy director of the N. N. Blokhin National Medical Research Center for Oncology for educational activities, Alexander Petrovsky, advised to undergo regular examinations with a doctor so as not to be afraid of cancer.
