digital transformation of a higher education institution goes beyond the simple automation of processes. Katherine Chuiluiza, director of the Information Technology Center of the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (Espol), points out that in the case of Espol, it has permeated the various fields of action. Some projects are:
– Creation of a culture of change towards digital transformation. This transformation includes the way your users are viewed and the service that is delivered. Training has been carried out since 2021 and continues to do so today.
– Improvement of teaching-learning support systems. Implementing classrooms and technologies that make the modalities in which learning is built more flexible; training teachers for e-learning, hybrid learning and other modalities; and adjusting interfaces that adapt “intelligently” to the various user profiles and needs.
– Design of services focused on the various users. Incorporating them in the co-design and continuous improvement processes, such as the improvement of the human talent management system, incorporating electronic signatures, process monitoring and agility of service to its actors.
– Creation of dynamic interaction channels between users and services. A series of applications have been created that allow a more agile, effective and timely communication in the various fields. Additionally, it is done data analytics of the interactions in the various channels.
– Implementation of sensors that allow building an intelligent campus. Through artifacts that include the Internet of Things (IoT), data is collected that provides information on the infrastructure, its use and others, to make decisions and plan. All this under the great campus sustainability umbrella.
– Implementation of telematic surveillance systems, detection, information and incident reporting o emergency situations and provision of rapid response mechanisms.
– Generation of the Governance of the Digital Transformation. So that foundations are built for this transformation.
Study modalities 2022
Dalton Noboa, Dean of the Espol Degree, adds that from the perspective of teaching they see the future as “a combination of the best practices of the face-to-face modality and the challenge of virtual environments, which allows us to build a hybrid study model , flexible and that responds to the standards of academic quality that the institution has always promulgated”.
From the first ordinary academic period (I PAO 2022), your students will have the option of taking courses in four study modalities: virtual popup, e-learning, hybrid and face-to-face
Emerging virtual modality: The course is developed 100% online synchronously, with teachers familiar with the use of technological and pedagogical resources to interact in class sessions.
Modality e-learning: It will apply the active and inverted learning methodology, distributing class time between hours in a virtual synchronous way with the teacher and autonomous asynchronous study hours by the student.
Hybrid mode: class sessions are given to students who attend in person and another group that connects virtually; this modality requires classrooms equipped with the necessary technological equipment.
There will also be pilots in a Face-to-face modality exclusively in practical activities in the science and engineering laboratories and field trips that students must develop in professionalizing subjects of higher years. (I)
