Former U.S. State Department Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker, in an interview with Ukraine 24, listed two aspects of the risk of a possible Russian invasion.
According to him, the risk of invasion should be divided into two parts: the possibility and intentions. Volker believes that Russia has the first because it has built up a lot of power around Ukraine. As for the intentions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, he, according to the politician, is still assessing the cost of this invasion and “waiting” for concessions for Russia, whether other countries will support Ukraine, how big it will be.
Volker also claims that the risk of attack is still there. According to him, when there is a build-up of power, “once the forces can be used.”
Earlier, Kurt Volker reproached the Russian authorities for demanding that Kiev comply with the Minsk agreements, but they themselves do not. According to him, Ukraine is ready to fulfill its obligations and “does its best.” However, the problem is that Russia “calls for the observance of the agreements and never complies with them itself.”
According to Volker, the Kremlin is only “trying to divert attention from its actions,” but does not change its “aggressive intentions” regarding Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly stated that it has no plans to invade Ukraine.
