What is the dust that floats in the skies of Cuenca made of?

Due to the intensification of the wind from the south, the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Ecuador reiterated that there is transport of particulate material (dust) from the coastal desert of northern Peru, affecting several locations in southern Ecuador.

The air quality index improved somewhat this Friday in Cuenca and its surroundings, because from being unhealthy yesterday it is presenting a moderate level today, according to information provided by the authorities of the Mobility Company of the Azuaya capital.

Known as calima or haze, this meteorological phenomenon consists of the presence in the atmosphere of very small particles of dust, ash, clay or sand in suspension, which can reduce air quality and even visibility in certain sections.

What does the powder contain

This particulate matter consists of a mixture of liquid and solid particles, organic and inorganic substances, which are suspended in the air and form part of air pollution.

The main components include sulfates, nitrates, ammonia, sodium chloride, carbon, mineral dust, metal ash and wateraccording to the Institute for Geoenvironmental Health of Madrid, Spain.

The World Health Organization (WHO) maintains that the health effects are extensive, related in some cases to upper respiratory symptoms such as allergic reactions, nasal congestion, sinusitis, cough, hay fever, eye irritationamong others.

How can I protect myself?

  • Reduce the duration of your outdoor activities.
  • Spend less time next to busy roads.
  • Use a mask and other protectors, such as glasses, caps, hats, long-sleeved sweatshirts or shirts.
  • Close doors and windows
  • Put a damp cloth in the cracks to prevent the entry of particulate matter.
  • Clean fruits and vegetables well before consuming.
  • Cover well the tanks or reservoirs of drinking water.

The municipal director of Risk Management of the Municipality of Cuenca, Tatiana Pineda, said that according to the consultations made by Pineda to the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi), this phenomenon will continue in the coming days.
