The Estonian authorities have identified the tasks of national defense in the event of possible military actions by Russia in Ukraine, the press service of the government of the country reports.
As Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas stated, “there is no direct military threat, but every person and organization must be prepared for the consequences of increased hostilities in Ukraine.” According to her, “aggressive behavior [России] regarding the security of the whole of Europe” forces the Estonian authorities to “thoroughly prepare for the crisis that accompanies the increase in military activity”.
The premier stressed that in addition to allied relations, the basis of Estonian security is self-defence and comprehensive national defense, and noted that society must be prepared “for the flow of military refugees, the deepening energy crisis, cyber attacks, as well as wider economic and social consequences.” Kallas added that the government “has a plan to improve the country’s preparedness and deal with such situations.”
It is also reported that the government has allocated 380 million euros for the needs of military national defense and noted the need to improve cybersecurity. The Ministry of Economy and Communications is charged with preventing and eliminating the consequences of the crisis for the country’s economy.
