How to apply for the European Health Card in Spain

One of the advantages of being a citizen of the European Union is being able to receive free healthcare in another EU country than the country of residence during a temporary stay.

The European sanitary card (TSE) is a free card that allows access to public health care, necessary for medical reasons, during a temporary stay in any of the 27 EU Member States, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, under the same conditions and at the same cost (care is free in some countries) as people insured in that country.

The covered benefits they include, for example, those dispensed in relation to chronic or pre-existing illnesses, as well as those related to pregnancy and childbirth.

The European health card is issued by the social security offices of each country.

Cases in which the European Health Card is not valid

1. How to apply for the European Health Card in Spain

The easiest way is to apply for the European Health Card by Internet, through the electronic headquarters of the Secretary of State for Social Security and Pensions.
