Not only the Omicron strain, but also other variants of the coronavirus are currently spreading on the territory of Russia, which creates an increased danger, said virologist Alexei Agranovsky.

The specialist stressed that the explosive growth in the incidence in Russia is influenced by the ability of different strains to infect different categories of the population: children are infected with omicron, while delta is more dangerous for adults and more often leads to a severe course of the disease. At the same time, the delta strain is still spreading on the territory of the Russian Federation, although it caused less than 50% of infections, RIA Novosti reports.

“Due to several strains in the population, the full spectrum of the spread of coronavirus is obtained,” Agranovsky emphasized. Moreover, in addition to an increase in the incidence among people of different ages, the close proximity of different strains can lead to further evolution of the coronavirus. “The probability of this event is the higher, the more sick people there are in our population,” the specialist noted. However, he added that the possibility of a new, more dangerous variant of the virus is not an inevitable scenario.
