Safe-conducts will be issued to enter the alluvial zone, in the north of Quito

Authorities in the capital of Ecuador announced this Thursday that, in order to prevent acts of crime, the passage to the area where a flood left at least 26 dead, 53 injured and 10 missing was restricted.

In the Metropolitan Emergency Operations Committee (COE), the mayor of Quito, Santiago Guarderas, indicated that two fences were created in the area, which will be controlled by the Armed Forces, the National Police and the Metropolitan Civil Agents.

“No person who does not have authorization from the Unified Command Post (PMU) will be able to enter that area. For control purposes, safe-conducts will be issued,” Guarderas said.

The Government of Quito explained that garbage collection will be carried out in the morning and afternoon and that the brigades that evaluate and carry out census work, as well as the medical ones, will be accredited by the PMU.

In a statement, he pointed out that the Drinking Water Company “has worked in the area and confirms that there is no longer an imminent danger, the waters have receded, the situation is under control and at the moment trees and poles that were uprooted by the alluvium are being removed. ”.

According to the authorities, the flood that hit the sectors of La Gasca, La Comuna and surrounding areas, in the center-west of the city, last Monday, has so far left 26 people dead, 53 injured and 10 missing.

What is a flood and what were the causes of the one that caused a tragedy in Ecuador

174 homes have been evaluated and it has been determined that 24 are affected on the first floor and 8 collapsed, while 27 vehicles and 22 motorcycles were affected.

Fourteen fences collapsed, forty garbage containers were affected, 20 power poles were destroyed and seven substations of the Quito Electric Company (EEQ) were affected.

According to the mayor, the catastrophe was due to an “extraordinary natural phenomenon”, which had its origin in the intense rain that fell on the city last Monday, with a record 75 liters per square meter, when two were expected.

But the neighbors attribute the tragedy to the uncontrolled construction on the slopes of the volcano reclaimed from wooded land, in addition to the accumulation of waste in the area. (I)
