RBC: In Russia, due to the “garbage reform” prices for batteries may jump

The Association of Trading Companies and Manufacturers of Electrical Household and Computer Equipment (RATEK), which includes Duracell, M.Video-Eldorado and DNS, sent a letter to Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin stating the risks of stopping the collection of batteries from the population and increasing prices for them . It is reported by RBC with reference to a copy of the letter. The increase could happen as early as March.

Representatives of RATEK argue that the “garbage reform” is to blame for the upcoming rise in prices. Because of it, the Federal Environmental Operator (FEO) will be the single operator for handling waste of I-II hazard classes, to which batteries belong. According to RATEK President Alexander Onischuk, the reform will lead to a new fee, which, in turn, will affect the cost of batteries.

At the same time, the head of Rosprirodnadzor, Svetlana Radionova, believes that “nothing will fundamentally change.” The Ministry of Natural Resources argues that the new rules will not make batteries more expensive, since the recycling system will be removed from the gray zone, and the transfer of waste to a single operator instead of a “box in the store” will not entail new financial costs.
