Damage to the municipal building of El Pangui after an earthquake in northern Peru

The inhabitants of Loja and Zamora Chinchipe, like other cities in Ecuador, were scared by the strong earthquake registered in the north of Peru, whose effects were also felt in the national territory, on the morning of this Thursday, February 3.

The tremor of an oscillatory nature was felt at 10:58 by many citizens who were carrying out some activity in their homes, commercial premises, private offices and institutions.

The infrastructure of the El Pangui Parish Government, in Zamora Chinchipe, was affected by the fall of part of the gypsumfall of some lamps and cracks in walls.

Windows were also broken on the site, the Municipality indicated on its social networks.

The rescue and risk agencies have not received reports of people affected in their physical integrity.

In Loja, after feeling the earthquake, several of the inhabitants immediately chose to go out into the street or to open places, such as plazas and parking lots.

The earthquake lasted several seconds and caused several items to move from their places.

“The lamps began to move from one side to the other. I thought I was dizzy, but then I saw my classmates get up from their desk. We went out into the street in an orderly manner, we had a big scare,” said an inhabitant of the city in the south of the country.

In cantons of the province of Lojana there were also citizen reports on social networks that reported the surprise at the earthquake.

The magnitude 6.8 earthquake, with a depth of 139 kilometers 90 km east of Santa María de Nieva, district of Nieva, province of Condorcanqui, in northern Peru, was felt in twenty provinces of Ecuador. (I)
