Drafting-Cuenca
The presence of particulate material remains over the sky of the city of Cuenca, as in other cities in southern Ecuador, for the second consecutive day.
The Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi) explained that the intensification of the wind from the south motivates the transport of particulate material (dust) specifically from the coastal desert of northern Peru.
That was ratified by the municipal director of Risk Management of the Municipality of Cuenca, Tatiana Pineda. Thus, he ruled out that it is ash from the Sangay volcano.
The meteorological agency indicated that the event could affect localities in the Inter-Andean region and in the interior of the Litoral region, especially in El Oro, part of Guayas and Los RĂos.
In addition, the phenomenon is estimated to occur in southern Amazonia, with greater probability in Zamora Chinchipe and Morona Santiago.
According to the consultations made by Pineda to the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi), this phenomenon will continue in the coming days, for which he recommends reinforcing the use of masks and other protectors, such as glasses, caps, hats, long-sleeved divers or shirts.
The Risk and Emergency Management Service also suggested closing doors and windows, placing a damp cloth in the cracks to prevent the entry of particulate material, cleaning fruits and vegetables well, and covering drinking water tanks or reservoirs well.
Basin Analysis
Day after day, the quality of the air that citizens in Cuenca breathe is not the best due to the presence of particulate matter.
According to information published by the Institute of Sectional Regime Studies of Ecuador, attached to the Vice-Rectorate for Research of the University of Azuay (Ierse), around noon this Thursday, the fine particles in the environment are at a level of 132 PM 2.5 , defined as unhealthy for sensitive groups, being tolerable from 0 to 50 PM 2.5.
In the monitoring carried out by Ierse, during the morning it went from “harmful” to “unhealthy”.
This particulate matter consists of a mixture of liquid and solid particles, organic and inorganic substances, which are suspended in the air and form part of air pollution.
Among the main components are sulfates, nitrates, ammonia, sodium chloride, carbon, mineral dust, metal ashes and water, according to the Institute for Geoenvironmental Health of Madrid, Spain.
The World Health Organization (WHO) maintains that the health effects are broad, in some cases related to symptoms in the upper respiratory tract, such as allergic reactions, nasal congestion, sinusitis, cough, hay fever, eye irritation , among others. (I)
