The omicron coronavirus strain is highly infectious compared to previous strains, so it is highly likely that it can be re-infected, warned virologist Anatoly Altshtein.

According to the expert, this strain “breaks through” the immunity of those who have had a coronavirus or have been vaccinated for a long time. It is likely that in the future, a person who has had a coronavirus because of the “omicron” may be re-infected with the same variety. At the same time, the doctor noted that such cases will be “less common than now,” when vaccinated and recovered from other variants of the virus become infected, RIA Novosti reports.

Altstein emphasized that the infectiousness of the “omicron” is due to the fact that it multiplies mainly in the upper respiratory tract. Because of this, infection is carried out in smaller doses than with previous strains.

The medic also added that it was the increased infectiousness of “omicron” that became one of the main reasons for the current surge in the incidence in Russia.
