China is far behind the US in artificial intelligence. This is stated in the report of the Institute of International and Strategic Studies of Peking University.
The text notes that the lag is due to the fact that only 34% of China’s top AI talent remained in the country, while 56% moved to the US. Among Chinese citizens who studied in the US, 88% stayed there and only 10% returned to China to work.
The report also noted that Chinese IT scientists are unlikely to return to their homeland due to the deterioration of Sino-US relations. Moreover, the PRC only three years ago began to develop talents in this area, while American universities have long been training students in this specialization. The US is named in the text as China’s main competitor in areas such as information technology, artificial intelligence, space and aerospace technology.
China should open academic exchange mechanisms, continue to invest in research, and opt for international cooperation to develop talent so that the gap with the United States does not widen, and so that there is no difficulty for China to import key components from other countries, acquire high-tech technologies and attracting talent, stated in the report.
