If the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory stops, Kiev will buy Russian fuel through intermediaries. Strana.ua writes about it.

According to media reports, the same Russian blue fuel will be supplied through Croatia or Hungary. And they will receive it through Nord Stream or Turkish Stream, the portal clarifies.

The publication writes that the gas, which Ukraine had already purchased from Hungary the day before, was delivered to the country from Russia. This was confirmed by the head of the “GTS Operator of Ukraine” Serhiy Makogon. He said that for the first time gas imports into the country from Hungary began, although before the gas transportation system allowed gas to be pumped only towards Hungary, however, after “technical measures” it became possible to supply gas in both directions. Makogon added that the Hungarian direction became the second after the Slovak guaranteed gas route to Ukraine, even in the absence of transit.

Recall that in December 2019, Moscow and Kiev agreed to extend the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory for the period from 2020 to 2024 with the possibility of extending the agreement for another 10 years. The contract provides for the transit of 65 billion cubic meters. m of gas in 2020 and 40 bcm. m annually from 2021 to 2024. The transit arrangement assumes a “pump or pay” principle, where transit fees are charged for the amount of booked capacity, even if the actual pumping is less. Transit of Russian gas to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transmission system last year amounted to 55.8 billion cubic meters. m, which was the lowest figure in the last 30 years.
