The Mazhilis (lower house) of the Parliament of Kazakhstan at a plenary session agreed with the amendment of the Senate to the constitutional law, which concerns the need to coordinate state initiatives in the main areas of foreign and domestic policy with the first president of the country, Nursultan Nazarbayev. It is reported by Interfax.

93 deputies voted unanimously for the adoption of the amendment. The law will be sent to the head of state for signature.

Along with this, the constitutional law adopted by the parliament provides for changes to the article of the law “On the First President”, according to which Nazarbayev will not head the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan and the country’s Security Council. At the same time, Elbasy can speak before the parliament of the republic and its chambers, participate in government meetings when discussing issues important for the country; be a member of the Constitutional Council of Kazakhstan.

Nazarbayev is the first President of Kazakhstan (1991-2019). In March 2019, he resigned as president of his own free will. His successor as head of state was Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

In January 2022, mass protests were suppressed in Kazakhstan, and CSTO troops were sent to restore order in the country. The result of the unrest was a wave of resignations of Nazarbayev’s cadres and their replacement by Tokaev’s.
