The exchange of remarks between Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenza and US Representative Linda Thomas-Greenfield at the January 31 meeting of the UN Security Council was the sharpest in recent years. So say the journalists of the influential American newspaper The Washington Post.

According to the publication, Nebenzya was outraged by the remark of the American envoy that Russia does not have any factual grounds for presenting Ukraine and Western countries as aggressors, fabricating a pretext for a hypothetical invasion of the territory of Ukraine. In addition, the Russian diplomat accused the United States of creating provocations that would escalate the situation around Ukraine. He stressed that “not a single Russian politician or public figure has said that we want to attack Ukraine.”

Earlier it became known that Nebenzya left the Security Council meeting room to meet with UN Secretary General António Guterres.

The hypothetical Russian attack on Ukraine, which may take place in the winter of 2021/2022, remains one of the central topics of the world media. Nevertheless, the only evidence of preparations for an “invasion” is satellite images of Russian military equipment in the regions adjacent to Ukraine, and the Russian Federation emphasizes that it has no such intentions.
