“Political censorship”: the editor-in-chief of “Echo of Moscow” criticized the demand of the Prosecutor General’s Office to remove materials about Navalny’s investigations

Aleksey Venediktov, editor-in-chief of the radio station Ekho Moskvy, called “political censorship” the demand of the Prosecutor General’s Office to remove materials about the investigations of the oppositionist and founder of the FBK (The Anti-Corruption Foundation, previously included by the Ministry of Justice in the register of organizations performing the functions of a foreign agent, and recognized as a banned extremist organization, was subsequently liquidated – ed. ed.) Alexei Navalny (in Russia included in the list of organizations and individuals involved in extremist activities or terrorism – ed. ed.).

“Of course, the demand of the Prosecutor General’s Office, transmitted to us through Roskomnadzor, to remove the 34 investigations of Alexei Navalny on corruption and illicit enrichment, from my point of view, is political censorship, which is prohibited in the Russian Federation,” commented Venediktov.

According to him, the editors will fulfill this requirement, but lawyers are now trying to figure out whether it will be possible to challenge it.

Venediktov noted that he “is completely incomprehensible why investigations into the illegal enrichment of government officials” and people close to the power circles “are a threat to the national security of the Russian Federation.”

We add that Rosbalt today also received a similar requirement for one of the materials published on the site. The agency was forced to fulfill it.
