More than 600 Chinese vessels would fish giant squid in Peruvian and Ecuadorian waters

A total of 631 Chinese vessels irregularly caught giant squid in the South Pacific, harming Peru, Ecuador and Chile, denounced Alfonso Miranda Eyzaguirre, president of the Committee for the sustainable management of giant squid (Calamasur).

According to the fisheries representative, a disorderly growth of Asian distant water fleets has been detected and systematic behavior of illegal fishing has been identified in Peruvian and Ecuadorian waters.

Miranda Eyzaguirre made the complaint during the X Meeting of the Commission of the Regional Fisheries Management Organization of the South Pacific (RFMO-PS), which was held recently in order to discuss and approve improvements to management and conservation measures related to squid. giant.

During the event, he also criticized the lack of adoption of the necessary conservation measures for the sustainable use of giant squid. “The precautionary principle, that basic principle of fisheries management that says that the absence of information is not an excuse to stop making urgent decisions, was set aside for another year,” he commented.

Consequently, the head of Calamasur warned that the jumbo squid fishery faces a clear and present danger of continued and uncontrolled growth in fishing effort, without a corresponding increase in catch and landings.

“Its sustainability may be compromised beyond repair if this situation is not addressed. Additionally, the absence of conservation measures that are currently in place puts this fishery at risk of being labeled an illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) activity,” he mentioned.
