Traffic cameras in Russia are often used “not to prevent violations, but to generate additional income for regional authorities and entrepreneurs.” This was reported to the Kommersant newspaper by the Prosecutor General’s Office following an inspection of the operation of automatic fixation systems.

In this regard, the department proposes to amend the legislation to more conveniently cancel the erroneous fines that were assigned to motorists.

As the newspaper notes, back in November 2021, speaking in the State Duma, Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov said that cameras are often used for the sake of “monetization” and “enrichment”, and security issues fade into the background.

Meanwhile, we recall that earlier the HSE Institute of Transport Economics and Transport Policy analyzed data on accidents on the federal road network in the Moscow Region and concluded that average speed cameras can reduce the number of accidents by 15% in winter and 24% in summer.

We also add that at the end of December last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law imposing fines of hundreds of thousands of rubles and imprisonment for up to three years for malicious violations of traffic rules.
