The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation agreed to move the area of naval exercises in the north-eastern part of the Atlantic, and this decision was “welcomed” by the head of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense of Ireland, Simon Coveney.
He said that he turned to his Russian colleague Sergei Shoigu with a request to reconsider the decision to conduct naval exercises off the coast of Ireland and received confirmation that “the exercises will be moved outside the exclusive economic zone of Ireland,” Lenta.ru reports.
Earlier, Russian Ambassador to Ireland Yuri Filatov confirmed that Moscow, in response to requests from Dublin, decided to adjust the area of the upcoming naval exercises in the Atlantic in February outside the exclusive economic zone of Ireland, so as not to interfere with fishermen from this country, RIA Novosti notes.
Prior to that, they threatened to disrupt the teachings of the Russian Navy in the northeastern part of the Atlantic Ocean.
It was assumed that the naval exercises will take place about 200 kilometers from the coast of the city of Cork, in the exclusive economic zone of Ireland. In addition, maneuvers were expected in the waters of the Mediterranean, North and Okhotsk Seas and in the Pacific Ocean.
