Collective immunity to coronavirus in the Russian Federation may be formed by the summer of 2022. This forecast was made by Sergei Voznesensky, Associate Professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases at the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (PFUR), Interfax reports.

According to him, this is due to the high infectiousness of the Omicron strain. At the same time, one should not talk about the end of the pandemic, since the emergence of a new strain is not excluded.

The expert believes that the speed of ending the pandemic will depend on factors such as the speed of formation of herd immunity. Given how quickly new cases appear, the formation of herd immunity, according to Voznesensky, is not excluded by the summer period.

Discussing whether the Omicron strain could be the last for the coronavirus, Voznesensky said that he was seriously skeptical about this issue. The possibility of another strain of the virus is quite possible, he said. It is unlikely that this will happen soon, but within a few months or a year – it is quite possible, he added.

The expert pointed out that in the evolution of its development, the virus pursues two directions – to become as infectious as possible and as less aggressive as possible for harm to human health.
