Previously acquired immunity against coronavirus will not help to avoid infection with Omicron, Andrey Isaev, head of the DNCOM Research Center for Molecular Genetic Research, said at a round table in Rosbalt.

“To say that the immune defense will somehow work now is not correct. It is clear that if a person has previously been ill with other strains or has been vaccinated, they will most likely easily endure this story, maybe even asymptomatically, but they will endure it. With a high degree of probability, almost everyone will get sick with omicron,” Isaev said.

The colleague was supported by epidemiologist Anton Barchuk. He urged people to get used to the idea that vaccination does not provide any guarantee of protection against COVID-19.

“The main idea of vaccination, especially with the advent of Delta and Omicron, is not the creation of some mythical herd immunity that will protect us from infection and eliminate it from the population. The task is to protect people from a severe course of the disease in order to turn the virus into one of the respiratory viruses that are already circulating in the population, ”said Barchuk.

According to him, the vaccination program in individual countries has shown this, at least in the case of states where anti-COVID restrictions are being lifted today.

Earlier, Anton Barchuk questioned the idea that Omicron itself is more easily tolerated by patients than previous versions of the infection.
