The Senate (upper house) of the Parliament of Kazakhstan today adopted amendments to the legislation, according to which the life-long chairmanship of the first president of the republic, Nursultan Nazarbayev, in the Security Council and the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan (ANC) is canceled, TASS reports.
Earlier, on January 19, these amendments were approved by the lower house of parliament – the Mazhilis. Now they will have to be approved by the head of state Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
Recall that earlier in January, Nazarbayev transferred to him the powers of the head of the Security Council of Kazakhstan, during the riots that swept the republic. Also, Nazarbayev’s relatives lost their high posts, and the former president himself disappeared from the field of view of compatriots and the media and only recently filed a message about himself, saying that he was alive and did not leave Kazakhstan.
At the same time, on January 20 this year, it became known that the first president of Kazakhstan retained the right to be a member of the Constitutional Council of the republic, as well as to speak in the government and parliament.
It should be noted that after the New Year, protests began in Kazakhstan – the protesters demanded a reduction in the price of liquefied gas. Later, the actions of discontent turned into riots and clashes with law enforcement officers, there are dead and wounded. The protesters demanded, in particular, the holding of new elections, consideration of the issue of lustration of people from the “clan” of ex-president Nazarbayev. Against this background, the government of Kazakhstan resigned, First Deputy Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov was appointed acting head of the cabinet of ministers, and a state of emergency was declared throughout the country. President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev requested assistance from the CSTO. During the riots and later, more than 10,000 people were detained, according to official figures.
