INEI: Netflix, Spotify and delivery services will enter the basket to measure inflation

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) He explained that the base year of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) will be updated to 2022.

According to INEI, after the National Survey of Family Budgets, and its respective analysis of the database, weighting of products, determination of brands and characteristics most demanded by families, as well as the places and frequencies of purchase, they will present on February 1 the variation of the CPI with the new consumption structure in Metropolitan Lima, in 26 cities in the country and at the national level.

They also reported that the new products included in the consumer basket are packaged communication services (duos or trios), streaming platform subscriptions (Netflix, Spotify, HBO, among others) and home delivery and distribution services.

Also services such as medical care for pets and personal protection medical products (surgical gloves, masks, etc.), etc.

It is worth emphasizing that the current base year for measuring the evolution of prices dates back to 2009, and this must be modified – according to international standards – every five years.

However, national and international long-distance telephone services, public telephone service, telephone cards, digital cameras, DVDs and suit making, among others, will be excluded from the basket due to their lower consumption.

Finally, INEI revealed that for this adjustment they had the advice of the International Monetary Fund and other research centers, in order to have a CPI consumption structure closer to reality.
