The United States is discussing sending an additional military contingent to the eastern flank of NATO before a potential escalation around Ukraine. About this, as RIA Novosti reports, CNN reports, referring to American officials.

Countries considering deploying additional forces include Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary, but no final decision has yet been made. Not all NATO members are ready for such actions, so the US is negotiating to send additional forces “on a bilateral basis.”

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO could strengthen its presence in Eastern Europe through new “battle groups” in the interests of security. He assured that NATO would not threaten Russia and was ready to continue negotiations to reduce tension on the borders of Ukraine.

In December last year, the Russian Foreign Ministry published drafts of a bilateral treaty on security guarantees and an agreement on measures to ensure the security of the Russian Federation and the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance, transferred by the United States. In particular, they stated that the United States must assume obligations to exclude further expansion of NATO in an easterly direction, to refuse to accept the former republics of the USSR, and now independent states, into the alliance.

On Wednesday evening, the American ambassador handed over to the Russian Foreign Ministry a written response from Washington to these proposals.
