Washington sees signs that Russian President Vladimir Putin is going to use military force against Ukraine. This, according to “Interfax”, said US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman.

“I don’t know if he has made a final decision, but we certainly see every indication that he is going to use military force sometime, maybe now or in mid-February,” Sherman said.

“I don’t know what’s in President Putin’s head. There is only one person who knows this and that is President Putin. I suspect that even the people around him don’t know what he will eventually do. I think they know the military readiness plans, the plans to use the military, but I suspect the president has other plans in mind as well,” Sherman suggested.

Earlier Wednesday, CNN, citing its sources, reported that the United States was discussing sending additional troops to NATO’s eastern flank before a potential escalation around Ukraine. Prior to this, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO could strengthen its presence in Eastern Europe through new “battle groups” in the interests of security.

US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan on Wednesday evening brought to the Foreign Ministry a written response from Washington to Moscow’s demands for security guarantees. It is reported by “Kommersant”. The diplomat, as specified, delivered two documents: one from the United States, the second from NATO. The content of the messages is not yet known.
