The State Duma adopted in the first reading a bill specifying the punishment for beatings, a Rosbalt correspondent reports.

The draft law proposes to supplement the current article of the Criminal Code 116.1 (Beating by a person subjected to administrative punishment) with a new part two, which provides for criminal liability for beating or committing other violent acts that caused physical pain, but did not entail the consequences specified in article 115 of the Criminal Code (Intentional infliction of a lung harm to health), and not containing signs of a crime under Article 116 of the Criminal Code (Battery) by a person who has a conviction for a crime committed with the use of violence.

As a punishment, it is proposed to provide for compulsory work for up to 480 hours, or corrective labor for up to one year, or restriction of freedom for the same period.

The draft law also provides for a corresponding change to Article 20 of the Criminal Procedure Code (Types of Criminal Prosecution), which provides that criminal cases on crimes provided for by the drafted second part of Article 116.1 of the Criminal Code will be considered criminal cases of public prosecution.
