In Quito, 6,800 tons of garbage are dammed, due to incidents in the El Inga landfill

The losses estimated by the municipal company exceed $320,000.

The demonstrations of residents of the communities near the El Inga landfill, in the northeast of Quito, caused the garbage accumulation at transfer stations that receive the garbage from the collectors. From Sunday 23 to this Tuesday, January 25, the waste did not reach its destination, located in the parish of Pifo. The protesters prevented the entrance of the bathtubs (trucks that transport garbage).

According to the Municipal Solid Waste Comprehensive Management Company (EMGIRS), Quito produces approximately 2,200 tons of garbage daily. That is, more than 6,800 tons remained dammed.

Inhabitants of the communities El Belén, Itulcachi, El Inga and Santa Ana staged clashes with agents of the National and Municipal Police. A protester was arrested; in addition, a metropolitan agent was injured with a cut to the head.

For their part, the residents claimed for the odors produced by this place, affecting your health. They also requested the dismissal of the manager of the EMGIRS, Maricruz Hernández, for not complying with agreements made with the representatives of the four communities.

For her part, the manager of EMGIRS, Maricruz Hernández, informed this newspaper that the reason for the residents’ demonstrations is the dismissal of two officials who live in these communities. “In a first session, it had been offered to keep the people who work in the compensation fund (budget that will go to the communities) to give continuity to the processes. However, the decision of separate these two people was communicated to the gentlemen of the community, because I have evidence that these people they are instigating the communities to mobilize against the municipal administrationHernandez asserted.

“Three days that have not allowed the entry of garbage to the landfill involve $321,965 that have been lost as a company,” he added.

Regarding the bad smells, the manager accepted that they have environmental problems, but that they are taking the necessary measures to comply with environmental regulations.
