PORTOVIEJO
Around 03:30 this Monday, January 24, the remains of Derek Gerard Pinargote arrived at a wake room in Portoviejo.
The 14-month-old boy, who suffered from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), died last Saturday night.
The family of the minor said that it would be an alleged medical malpractice raised in a clinic in Quito, where he was given care after the dose of Zolgensma was administered, a drug that would almost completely reduce his ailment.
In the Facebook wall that the minor’s family has (A miracle for Derek) an alleged medical malpractice was reported, before which the family demanded investigation and justice.
The publication indicates that on the 13th of this month Derek underwent an operation, -Nissen surgery-, where they removed the tube that he had had almost since he was born, to place a gastric button with which he would improve the supply of food, mainly milk, provision with which he had problems after the operation that meant the withdrawal of the probe that the child was carrying.
Derek died, one of the Ecuadorian children who managed to receive the most expensive medicine in the world for his spinal muscular atrophy
The following days of the operation Derek suffered from pain and complaints so he was taken to the clinic in Quito again, where he stayed until Saturday.
The publication notes that a necropsy was performed on Derek. “We decided to do the autopsy and it turned out that the milk had spread all over his abdomen and thus reached his lungs causing his death, it is very hard for me to tell all this, but I do not want my son’s death to go unpunished” , recounts the writing on the page.
Although the day and time of the burial of Derek’s remains were not disclosed, it was unofficially known that it would be this Monday afternoon, the day that coincides with the 24th birthday of his mother Genesis. (I)
