Young people who have matured are less and less willing to leave their parents because of the financial inaccessibility of independent living, says economist, professor Yulia Vymyatnina. In a commentary to a Rosbalt correspondent, the expert linked the trend with the high cost of apartments, the level of employment and the consequences of the 2008 crisis.
“The main reason is economic, as it is difficult to pay a mortgage or rent a house. Although I do not rule out that on average in the country it is relatively less expensive than in Europe and the USA,” Vymyatnina noted.
According to her, due to cohabitation with parents, young people save not only on mortgages and rent, but also on food, clothing, technology, and entertainment. There is also free time – a valuable resource, the expert added.
“The situation in the European Union is very uneven. We see countries where there are problems with youth employment. In Russia, at least at the official level, there are no such problems. In the United States, after the 2008 crisis, the number of adult children living with their parents increased, and this is also a consequence of the fall or loss of income by young people, ”the economist cited foreign examples.
According to her, the older the youth, the more noticeably increases the desire to live separately.
“There are own families, children. Separate living has fewer conflicts. In addition, income grows with age, allowing you to rent a house, ”summed up the expert.
Let us add that, according to VTsIOM and DOM.RF, 8.8 million people aged 18 to 35 live with their parents, that is, almost 28% of all Russian youth.
