Art critic Valery Akhunov will reveal the secret of Bryullov’s painting “The Last Day of Pompeii”

On January 25, art critic Valery Akhunov will hold a meeting “K. P. Bryullov and F. A. Bruni: Old Testament and New Age. The event will start at 19:00 as part of the “Kvartirnik” project.

The meeting will continue the cycle “Secret Meanings of Famous Paintings”, which introduces the guests of the “Kvartirnik” to the unusual details of works of art and helps to interpret them in the context of modern culture.

On January 25, we will talk about two great masters of the 19th century, Karl Bryullov and Fyodor Bruni. Listeners will learn how the painting “The Last Day of Pompeii” is connected with the history of the ancient world and Christianity. The art critic will also reveal the secret of the female characters of the canvas: they are all written from the same girl.

During the meeting, Valery Akhunov, together with the guests, will analyze the painting by F. Bruni “The Copper Serpent” – the largest canvas in the history of Russian art, which covers an area of ​​48 square meters.

“The picture is also considered one of the most mysterious – I will tell you how the copper serpent got on the crosses of the Christian church and who is actually depicted on the canvas,” Akhunov said.

Valery Akhunov is a leading researcher at the State Russian Museum, candidate of art history, candidate of economic sciences, member of the presidium of the National Academy of Tourism, lecturer at the department of social service and tourism at the St. Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts, author of more than 60 scientific articles and monographs .
