British neurologist Mohan Sekeram has identified five signs that a person with a headache should seek medical help promptly.
As the expert notes, there are a number of reasons why a head may hurt, while lifestyle plays an important role. For example, people who work shifts or have to stay active at night for some reason often experience headaches when they wake up. Caffeine abuse and constant sitting in front of the computer, which contributes to muscle tightness, spasms, can also contribute to such pain.
According to Sekeram, those who suffer from sleep disorders, stress, can also regularly experience headaches, as well as people with mental health problems.
In many cases, the neurologist pointed out, the appearance of a headache does not mean something life-threatening, but unusually severe pain for a person is a serious reason for seeking an examination. The most disturbing option, the physician called a headache resembling a blow – it occurs abruptly, suddenly and immediately felt as extremely strong.
Sekeram named several signs that indicate the need to seek urgent medical help with a headache: along with pain, blurred or double vision occurs; headache accompanied by vomiting; headache occurs at night and wakes the person; along with pain, neck stiffness and high fever are observed; the pain escalates to a severe condition, not responding to conventional analgesics.
The neurologist warned that the appearance of pain in these cases is an external symptom of serious internal pathologies, with a high probability of life-threatening.
