US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held talks that lasted an hour and a half. The first statement following the results of the consultations was made by the representative of the Russian Federation.

He stated that the meeting was “interim”. Russia during the meeting in Geneva heard a preliminary verbal reaction to its proposals for security guarantees, Lavrov added. He said his meeting with Blinken would help the US prepare responses to proposals for security guarantees.

“The reaction was preliminary, we were warned about it. It was accompanied by some clarifying questions addressed to us, the answers to which will help the American side prepare a written response to our written drafts under an agreement with the United States and under an agreement with NATO, ”Lavrov explained. At the same time, he added that “the experience of dealing with the West on security issues is replete with cases of broken promises.”

According to Lavrov, the United States promised to provide written responses to Russia’s proposals on security guarantees in Europe by January 30.

As the Russian minister noted, the US representative agreed that it is necessary to conduct a more reasonable dialogue, Russia expects that emotions from the US will decrease, but there are no guarantees.

The negotiators also discussed the Ukrainian crisis. Lavrov stressed that “Russia has never threatened Ukraine through the mouths of its official representatives.” Nevertheless, according to Lavrov, he never heard from Blinken the rationale for the American position on the “Russian threat” to Ukraine.

Recall that today’s meeting in Geneva was the second between the delegations of the Russian Federation and the United States regarding security guarantees in Europe. The first took place there on January 10. In December, Russia presented the United States with a vision of security in Europe (rejection of NATO expansion) and is now waiting for a written response from the American side to its proposals.
