As of January 2021, there are 346 Russian citizens in the prisons of Belarus, and another 109 of our compatriots are awaiting sentencing in a pre-trial detention center. This is reported by RBC with reference to the data received by the Russian Embassy in Belarus, indicating that the last time similar information was provided on July 1, 2021.
It is known that the persecution of at least 11 citizens of the Russian Federation is connected with the civil confrontation that broke out in Belarus in August 2020 in connection with the presidential elections in the country. Among the protesters with Russian citizenship serving time are 21-year-old Yegor Dudnikov, who administered the Telegram channel “Civil Self-Defense Detachments of Belarus” and was sentenced to 11 years in prison, 56-year-old reserve officer Igor Kopanayko, who was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison freedom for pouring polyurethane foam on the door of a police officer, sentenced to 2.5 years in prison, 51-year-old Andrei Novikov, a volunteer in the team of Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, and others.
Three more Russian citizens involved in the 2020 protests are awaiting sentencing, including a friend of the former editor-in-chief of Nexta Telegram channels Roman Protasevich, who faces up to six years in prison.
